Give Way is a life-sized western grey kangaroo inspired by the 
wildlife around James’ home near Pelican Lagoon, and by the many animals lost to road traffic on Kangaroo Island.

 

Drawing on his engineering background, he achieves remarkable accuracy and detail using discarded road signs, the colours and markings of which create a vivid, layered surface. Each piece is carefully cut, shaped, and assembled through a rhythmic, process-driven approach.

 

Give Way reflects the unavoidable tensions of regional life, symbolising the collision between humans, animals and machines, while inviting us to reconsider our impact on the natural world.

 

Indiana James (James Newcomer) died in December 2025. He created distinctive animal sculptures from recycled and found materials, transforming the remnants of human activity into striking new forms.
